Four Pillar Friday
Your weekly guide to thriving in every aspect of life—Physical, Mental, Spiritual, and Financial Wellness.

This Week’s Quote:
“To keep the body in good health is a duty… otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear.”— Buddha

Physical Wellness

A 2023 meta-analysis published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine found that physical activity is more effective than medication or counseling alone in managing symptoms of depression, anxiety, and psychological distress.

The study reviewed 97 reviews, 1,039 trials, and over 128,000 participants—making it one of the most comprehensive reviews on the topic to date. And the most effective interventions? Aerobic exercise, resistance training… even walking.

No perfect plan. No intense protocols. Just intentional, consistent movement.

This doesn’t mean medication or therapy aren’t valuable. They absolutely are. But it’s a powerful reminder that motion creates emotion. That when we move our bodies, we often shift our minds, too.

So if this week’s been heavy…start small. A walk. A quick lift. Some air squats and push-ups. Not for performance. Not for vanity. For presence.

Because movement isn’t just about fitness. It’s about mental clarity, emotional balance, and showing up for your life.

Let your body lead and mind will catch up.

Mental Wellness
Reframing, or cognitive reappraisal to use the fancy language, isn’t just a buzzword or new age technique. It’s a proven strategy that helps shift perspective and support mental resilience.

A University of Pennsylvania–affiliated positive psychology framework demonstrates that reframing significantly reduces symptoms of depression and improves well-being over time. While additional studies show that in highly stressed individuals, frequent use of reframing strategies can markedly weaken the link between perceived stress and depressive symptoms. Even in the midst of real-world pressures like work, parenting, and even racing.
For example, You prepared for a big client meeting or presentation. It didn’t go the way you hoped and maybe you stumbled, forgot something, or didn’t get the response you wanted.

Your first thought is probably, “I blew it. I’m not good at this. Maybe I’m not cut out for this role.”

However, shifting that perspective and stating “That was a tough moment, but it gave me clear feedback. Now I know what to improve upon, and next time I’ll show up even stronger and dialed in.”

First and foremost, this technique shifts your internal dialogue by helping you reinterpret setbacks as growth opportunities and stressors as prompts for perspective. Creating  emotional flexibility and breaking the cycle of spinning out. It’s a way to shift from self-judgement to self-coaching.
Here is a tool we teach at The 9:03 as a practice:

Start with: “What’s one thing that didn’t go as planned and what might it be teaching me instead?”
Next: Choose a limiting belief (e.g. “I always fail”) and test it with action. Then reframe it based on what actually happened.
Reframing Template:
Identify a negative thought. (e.g. “I messed up the presentation.”)
Reframe with context:
“It gave me feedback. What’s one thing I can learn or improve next time?”

Financial Wellness

In an article I was rereading the other day, Warren Buffett, 93 years old at the time and worth over $145 billion, offered a reminder that hits deeper than any stock tip:

“I can buy anything I want, basically. But I can’t buy time.”

The comment came as Buffett reflected on what really matters in life, emphasizing that success isn’t about what you have…it’s about how you live. He spoke candidly about surrounding himself with people he enjoys, doing work he finds meaningful, and waking up each day excited to keep going.

He also warned against the trap of chasing wealth at the cost of living:

“When you’ve got all the money you need, and you’re still running 100 mph toward something you don’t need, what are you doing it for?”

At The 9:03 Collective, we’ve always said: Time is your most valuable currency. Yes, financial planning matters. Yes, building wealth is important. But what’s the point if it’s not aligned with a life that feels rich and grounded now. Not just in that undetermined someday?

So this week, ask yourself:

  • What am I spending my time chasing?
  • Is it aligned with the life I actually want?
  • What would it look like to invest time, not just spend it?

Because even Warren Buffett can’t buy more time. And maybe the richest life is the one where your time, energy, and purpose are finally in sync.

Spiritual Wellness

Music has never been just background noise for me. It’s a thread that runs through nearly every season, every emotion, every chapter of my life.

I was thinking about that the other day while brewing beer with my dad. Yes, the one that’ll soon be named after him and on tap at our favorite local spot. More on that soon.

Naturally, music came up as we talked about how we got here. The shows we’ve seen. The songs that marked certain milestones. The albums that somehow kept everything together.

A single song can transport me: Back to a long run in the cold. To a quiet drive with my kids. To a late summer night with my wife. To a moment when I needed comfort but didn’t know how to ask for it. Thanks, Bruce for The Rising album. It came at a time I didn’t know how much I truly needed it.

Music grounds me. It lifts me. It connects me to others and somehow, more deeply to myself.

As Psychology Today calls it, music is “emotional glue.” It amplifies joy. It softens sorrow. It often says the things we can’t find words for.

That’s why I turn to it in so many moments in my life.

So this week ask, “What song holds a memory you never want to forget?” or “How might you make space for more moments like that?”

Because spiritual wellness isn’t just about stillness or solitude. Sometimes, it sounds like your favorite song playing over and over again.
