Four Pillar Friday
Your weekly guide to thriving in every aspect of life—Physical, Mental, Spiritual, and Financial Wellness.

This Week’s Quote:
“Happiness is not in another place, but this place… not for another hour, but this hour.” — Walt Whitman

Physical Wellness

I’m not sure I have to many vices, but if I had to name one, it’s coffee.

Few things bring me more joy than a hot cup of black coffee in the morning. It’s a ritual. How I start my days. A little burst of happiness when I hear that grinder in the morning.

And if I’m being honest, I don’t always follow my own advice.
I’ll have it later than I probably should…I’ll indulge in a good iced oat milk latte on a hot summer day…Or go for that extra cup (or three) during long, cold winter mornings.

So you can imagine how happy I was to see on of my favorite scientists, Dr. Rhonda Patrick, break down the latest science on coffee’s benefits not just for energy, but for long-term physical health.

From antioxidant support to liver function to exercise performance, there’s real evidence that coffee (in moderation) can be a powerful partner in your physical wellness toolkit.

Turns out, this daily joy of mine might be doing more good than I realized.

Mental Wellness

Speaking of coffee, it sets up another important part of my morning routine.

Yes, I start with a cup at home before my workout—but afterward, I head to my local coffee shop: Heartwood Coffee Roasters (check them out if you’re in Chagrin Falls, Orange, or Hudson).

When we moved back to Ohio from Arizona, one of the things I really wanted was to be part of and support our local community. I found Heartwood in the first few weeks we were back, and started going regularly.

Then COVID hit.

Everything shut down. But Heartwood kept showing up. And so did I. When you couldn’t go inside, they brought it out to the car. When masks were required, I still went. When they supported frontline workers and you could buy a bag to donate and I did that too.

It became something I could do each day to have a small, meaningful impact. And over time, that daily ritual evolved into something much more.

Now, I can say that the conversations, friendships, and people I’ve met because of that shop have become an important part of my social wellness.

It’s not just coffee…for me it’s connection. And sometimes, that’s exactly what we need most.

Financial Wellness

When Coffee Connects the Pillars…

It’s amazing how these pillars connect together, right? Actually, not so surprising.

It’s something I’ve learned (and lived) over almost 25 years, but let’s stick with coffee for a second…

If you’ve ever spent time in the personal finance world, you’ve heard it: “Stop spending $5 or $6 on lattes.” And yes, if you’re digging a hole or piling up debt, that advice might be sound.

But there’s more to it.

That same Harvard paper I have recommended and referenced a few times—If Money Doesn’t Make You Happy Then You Probably Aren’t Spending It Right—makes a powerful case: It’s not about how much you spend. It’s about how you spend it.

Are you just rushing through the drive-thru? Or is that coffee part of something bigger?

A conversation with your favorite barista. A chance to connect with your running group after a long Saturday effort. A morning ritual where familiar faces help you start your day with presence and connection.

That’s what intentional spending looks like. That’s what makes it meaningful. For me, it’s not just a coffee. It’s physical wellness in a routine. It’s social wellness through community. It’s financial wellness by spending with intention. And it’s even spiritual wellness when it becomes a rhythm of reflection.

When your life is aligned to what matters, the pillars don’t just coexist they support and reinforce each other.

And sometimes, it all starts with that cup of black coffee.

Spiritual Wellness

A growing body of research shows that purpose isn’t just a woo woo idea or something we all hope to have in our life. In the age of lifespan, healthspan, and longevity it’s a powerful force for health.

In fact, a study published in 2019 for JAMA Network Open found that people with a strong sense of life purpose were significantly less likely to die early than those without it. Even after adjusting for age, gender, and health status.

Let that sink in: Purpose can be a protective factor for your body, not just your mind. A purposeful life doesn’t just feel better; it leads to living better and longer.

Why? Purpose creates a ripple effect:

  • You’re more likely to protect your health through better sleep, nutrition, movement, and proactive care.
  • You handle stress better and bounce back quicker when life throws challenges your way. It helps you develop a stronger sense of resilience and grit.
  • It may even help reduce inflammation, a known trigger of chronic illness.

It is why the Spiritual pillar of wellness sits at the top for us at The 9:03. It is not only foundational, but helps you align your actions each day to what matters the most. When your actions align with what matters most, and you’re anchored to something bigger than yourself, everything else strengthens.
