Four Pillar Friday

It’s easy to overestimate the power of big moments and underestimate the small ones. I think we all fall into that cycle especially heading into the holiday season and New Year’s resolution season. When we lay out big, ambitious goals.

But most people quit within three weeks. The research says it, and we have all lived it.

The truth is that real transformation doesn’t happen in the big announcements. It happens in the quiet, ordinary days. The little steps that build the habits that create momentum.

Because it’s not the big goals that change us.

It’s the small steps in between — the consistent, intentional choices that move us closer to who we want to become.

Physical Wellness

It’s easy to believe you need big workouts, long gym sessions, or perfect routines to make a difference. But according to a large-scale study, even a continuous 10- to 15-minute walk gives a significant health boost particularly for those whose longest walks were under 5 minutes.

That’s our reminder this week: transformation doesn’t always come from dramatic shifts. Sometimes it comes from stepping out the door for just 10 or 15 minutes. Taking the little walk is still showing up. It’s still choosing to do something instead of nothing.

Physical wellness isn’t only about the grand goals: the marathon, the Ironman, the misogi, the body transformation. It’s also about the small commitment to your body today so you have freedom tomorrow. The real gift of health comes when you build a foundation on consistent micro-actions that carry you into all the things you still want to do.

So if you’re feeling that nudge to move. Go take the quick walk. Warm weather, sideways snow, rain, or sunshine…it’s 15 minutes. And there are few better ways to start, break up, or end your day.

The big peaks matter, but so do the steady steps that get us there.

Mental Wellness

One of the most practical and powerful ideas in Atomic Habits is habit stacking: attaching a small new habit to something you already do.

“I will (new habit) after I (current habit).”

It’s simple, but the psychology behind it is foundational. You’re not just creating a routine. You’re rewiring your mindset and identity. Each small commitment reinforces the story you tell yourself: I’m the kind of person who follows through. I’m the kind of person who grows. I am the kind of person who’s committed to 1% each day.

Because mental wellness isn’t about erasing stress or just being content. It’s about training your mind to return to what matters. To build small moments of awareness, focus, and recovery into your day until they become part of who you are.

Try it this week. When you pour your morning coffee, start with a glass of water.
When you get ready for bed, plug your phone in across our room.
When you brush your teeth in the evening, take your vitamins.

These are small things. But stacked together, they create the mindset of someone who is intentional with their time and attention. Someone who doesn’t just react to life but shapes it.

Because mental strength doesn’t come from doing everything right.
It comes from showing up, little by little, until the small habits start to build a larger peace.

Financial Wellness

In financial planning, we ask clients to track every dollar. What are your fixed costs? Mortgage, car loan, tuition, bills. Then your discretionary spending. Things like dinners out, trips, entertainment. Every line item has a category, every expense a reason.

But when was the last time someone asked you to do the same with your minutes? Your most valuable currency.

Where do your hours actually go?

What are your fixed costs, the things that truly matter, family, health, relationships, rest? And what’s discretionary… the scrolling, Netflix, the overcommitting, the things you wish you said no to?

In wealth management, we obsess over returns, allocation, and diversification. But time deserves the same attention, and I would argue even more. Because the way we spend our minutes shapes the kind of life we live.

We all get the same allowance or income each day: 1,440 minutes. No one earns more. No one saves them for later. You can’t invest them, but you can spend them with intention.

So maybe the question isn’t “Where’s my money going?” Maybe it’s “Where’s my time going and is it aligned with what I value most?” Because your true balance sheet isn’t in dollars. It’s in minutes.

And how you spend them tells the real story of your wealth.

Spiritual Wellness

One of my favorite trips this year was to see Oasis in LA at the Rose Bowl. I’d watched videos of the shows before we went, and I’ve watched even more since. Of course, Don’t Look Back in Anger has always been my favorite, but lately, Little by Little has been the one I have played over and over.

There’s a line in it that hits differently now: “True perfection has to be imperfect.”

That lyric says a lot about where I am and what spiritual wellness feels like to me. Life’s not about getting everything right or having the answers. It’s about learning to be okay with the journey. The course corrections, the setbacks, the small steps forward that don’t always look like progress but still move us closer to something meaningful.

Spiritual growth happens the same way. In those mornings as the sun comes up. Honest reflection. Letting go of what you can’t control. Choosing presence instead of perfection. Staring up at the stars on those cold dark nights.

We spend so much in pursuit of something, but at some point, it becomes less about reaching the finish and more about learning to walk with whoever and whatever is around you.

Maybe that’s what “little by little” really means. Finding space in the slow, steady work of becoming who you’re meant to be.

Because the truth is, life doesn’t change all at once. It happens, as Noel sings, little by little.
