Rethinking Education for Fulfillment and Financial Well-Being
February 18th, 2025 // Adam Bruderly
For generations, education has been framed as a means to an end—a path to financial stability, achievement, and success. Families invest in college degrees, prestigious schools, and career tracks with the expectation that financial security will follow. But as we guide the next generation, we must ask:
Are we teaching them how to flourish, or are we simply training them to chase income?
At Journey Wealth, we believe financial well-being is about more than numbers. It’s about aligning your time, money, and purpose to create a meaningful life. And when it comes to education, the real opportunity isn’t just to maximize earning potential but to help people develop their strengths, build resilience, and invest in a future that aligns with who they are.
The Flawed Narrative of Success
Too often, education is structured around external markers of success:
✔ High test scores and grades
✔ Admission to a top-tier school
✔ Landing a high-paying job
While these factors can be important, they don’t guarantee fulfillment. We’ve seen countless professionals reach financial success only to feel burned out, unfulfilled, and disconnected from their real values.
We need to shift the conversation. Income alone isn’t the measure of a well-lived life. Instead, the right education should empower people to align what they do, how they do it, and how they feel about it.
A New Framework: Investing in Education That Builds Flourishing
Instead of focusing solely on achievement, what if we redefined education as an investment in holistic success? That means helping students:
✔ Master what they’re great at – not just getting degrees, but developing valuable skills that create meaningful contributions.
✔ Understand how they work best – recognizing how their environment, habits, and values influence long-term success.
✔ Align their strengths with real-world opportunities – not just choosing a career path, but designing a life where financial stability and personal fulfillment intersect.
✔ Balance financial success with well-being – ensuring their educational choices support long-term security, not just short-term gains.
What This Means for Families & Financial Planning
At Journey Wealth, we don’t just talk about financial success—we help clients align their financial resources with their values and vision. When it comes to education, that means shifting from “How much will this degree earn?” to “How does this investment serve a life of purpose and financial well-being?”
As families navigate decisions about college, career paths, and generational wealth, here are a few guiding principles to consider:
1️⃣ Think Beyond Traditional Career Tracks: Encourage exploration beyond conventional definitions of success—financial wealth should support life goals, not dictate them.
2️⃣ Invest in Strengths, Not Just Degrees: Education should refine natural talents, not just accumulate credentials. What you’re good at matters just as much as what pays well.
3️⃣ Design a Life, Not Just a Job: Financial security isn’t about chasing salaries—it’s about creating flexibility, autonomy, and the ability to do meaningful work.
4️⃣ Align Wealth With Purpose: A high-paying job that funds a lifestyle you don’t enjoy isn’t success. Financial planning should help ensure that your education, career, and wealth work together to build a life you’re proud of.
5️⃣ Teach Long-Term Financial Thinking: Learning isn’t just about securing a job at 22—it’s about building a foundation that ensures financial freedom and fulfillment at 32, 42, and beyond.

Preparing the Next Generation for True Wealth
True financial success isn’t just about how much you make—it’s about how well your financial choices align with the life you want to live.
If we want to set the next generation up for success, we need to go beyond achievement and income. We need to help them invest in their strengths, align their financial choices with their values, and build lives of purpose, impact, and fulfillment.
At Journey Wealth, we help individuals and families make financial decisions that create both security and significance. Let’s start the conversation today.

Mid-Quarter Market Commentary
While the Fed and the market are fairly aligned in their expectations, fixed income markets are likely to remain somewhat volatile while the fiscal impacts of the new administration’s policies become clearer. However, higher yields insulate bond investors from interest rate risk and elevated equity valuations make bonds more attractive on a relative basis. Given the level of concentration within US equity markets, we believe that international, value and small-cap equities provide a critical element of diversification. We advocate building portfolios to achieve your long-term goals as opposed to trying to react to the latest headlines. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to your advisor to schedule time to discuss your financial plan, including your goals and planning assumptions.
